A deceptive cat
This cat is painted on a boarded up window. The window itself looks real, but is part of a "trompe l'oeil" design which makes it seem to be on a wall set at an angle to the front of the building, though in fact it is part of the frontage itself. For context, the building appears to the right of Image

The Bermondsey Watch House
This unusual octagonal building is on the corner of Bermondsey Street and Long Lane. It is within the old churchyard of St Mary Magdalene, now in the ownership of Southwark Council, and on the site of the old Bermondsey Abbey. It has an interesting history: such buildings were erected in the 19th century for what we would now call security guards to watch out for "body snatchers" who would exhume recently buried corpses to sell for medical or other purposes. The watch house is listed grade 2 (list entry number 1376581). At the time of the photo it was not in use, but a planning application had been made to lease it as a cafe. For a post-conversion photo, see Image

The Bermondsey Watch House, refurbished
Compare this view with a pre-refurbishment one Image The new glass doors were not part of the planning permission for this listed building so it remains to be seen whether they are allowed to stay. Other slight changes since January 2013 are the removal of the road name plate, replacement of one of the chimneys with a new flue, an additional small green pillar next to the larger one that has itself been redecorated, and the trees behind have been pruned..
