"The Navigators", Hay's Galleria (closeup)
A rivet-covered bronze sculpture with the face of a man and the body of an industrial-age ship, the Navigators is actually an enormous kinetic machine. The 60-foot sculpture by artist David Kemp was installed in 1987 during the renovation of Hay's Galleria, which saw the conversion of the old wharf into a shopping centre. When activated, its oars move through the water at its sides. Kemp is a British artist best known for his large assemblage sculptures.

Hay's Galleria roof
The unusually kinked glass and steel roof of Hay's Galleria is an attractive piece of structural engineering. It covers the cental concourse of the Galleria which is lined with restaurants and shops. See also

The Navigators statue in Hay?s Galleria
Hay’s Wharf is named for the family who used to own it. The reason that the Navigators statue is in a pool of water is because this area, with its impressive vaulted roof, was once an open-air dock at which tea clippers and other ships would land to discharge their cargo. Frederick Horniman, the social reformer, collector and tea merchant, whose collection is housed today in the Horniman Museum, had a tea warehouse in the wharf buildings which is now a pub.

David Kemp's 'The Navigators'
A fantastical sculpture in Hay's Galleria, once Hay's Dock, in the Pool of London, now restored. The dock , in the mid 19th century, received ships bringing food to the city. In particular, the tea clippers docked here.
"The Navigators are high but not dry in a pond in a galleria that was once a wharf in the pool of London. This large sculpture represents the ships, the monsters and the men that drove them, and is animated by a bizarre collection of moving parts, pumps and water features.
It is made from bronze, welded steel, found objects, motors, pumps, kinetic and water features
