Distance

Southwark: Blackfriars Crown Court, Pocock Street, SE1
Extremely confusingly to the stranger, Blackfriars Crown Court is not in Blackfriars, north of the River Thames, but south of the river in Southwark. In fact Southwark Crown Court is nearer, in terms of northings, to Blackfriars than Blackfriars Crown Court. No doubt some kind soul can explain... In the meantime I await deportation to Tasmania for committing the heinous crime of drawing this apparent misnomer to the attention of the public.

Ripley Buildings, Rushworth Street
Early public housing, by R.M. Taylor of the London County Council, 1896-97. A parallel block, Merrow Buildings, lies behind. Pevsner draws our attention to "quirky Arts and Crafts details ... angular chimney gables and big eaves". Grade II listed.

55 Great Suffolk Street
Very rare to find a Victorian warehouse hereabouts which has not received the attentions of prettifying developers. There must be a story behind that, but it's hard to believe that it will remain in this state for long. Grade II listed. Seen from under a railway bridge on Surrey Row.
