This is part of a Guibal fan house associated with the former Hendre-ladis Colliery (later Ynyscedwyn Colliery).

Ynysgedwyn Fan House
This is the top of a shaft extracting air from Ynysgedwyn mine (variously spelled Yniscedwyn, Ynysgedwen) - which was previously Hendre-Ladis colliery.
It is the only surviving example of its kind in Wales and only one of four in Britain.
It used a "Guibal" fan which pushed air away from the axis of rotation (a bit like a water wheel in reverse) rather than the modern conventional fans which push air along the axis of rotation.
