Penrhos, Maenclochog
Until the last occupant died in 1968 this was the last inhabited thatched cottage in Pembrokeshire, and it and its contents remain as they were then. The thatched part is a two-room cottage, a rebuilding of the mud-walled type that was built overnight on roadside waste. The extension provided a bedroom. The outhouse beyond the driveway to Blaen-sawd was probably a scullery and wash-house, and is now the toilet. Viewing is by appointment with the museums department at Scolton Manor.

Penrhos Cottage, Nr Maenclochog, SW Wales
To the south west of Maenclochog is Penrhos Cottage, a tiny cottage that was once home to a family of 12! This is a typical North Pembrokeshire thatched cottage that has survived almost unchanged since the 19th Century. Built as an ‘overnight’ cottage in about 1800 and later rebuilt in stone, Penrhos, with its original Welsh oak furniture, provides a unique opportunity to view the cottager's life in the past.

Detail of render at Penrhos Cottage
The cement render is smoothed in a continuous line over the neck between the main cottage and the outbuilding. This cement layer then extends over the whole of the tiled roof - a common feature on Pembrokeshire cottages.
