Abaty Hendygwyn ar Daf / Whitland Abbey
Sefydlwyd Abaty Sistersiaid Hendygwyn ar Daf gan y Normanaid yn 1140. Adeiladwyd abaty newydd yn y man presennol yn 1151. Yn sgil llwyddiant yr Arglwydd Rhys yn erbyn yr Eingl-Normaniaid daeth yr abaty am ganrifoedd yn gefnogol iawn o'r tywysogion brodorol. Ar ol gwrthryfeloedd gwaedlyd Llywelyn ap Grufudd ac Owain Glyndwr dioddefodd yr Abaty yn enbyd wrth i'r Eingl Normaniaid ddial ar y mynachod. Wedi'r Diwygiad Protestannaidd daeth yr Abaty yn adfail a'r meini ar hyd y blynyddoedd yn gwar cyfleus. Dyna pam nad oes ond ychydig o furiau'r hen eglwys yn weddill. Whitland Cistercian Abbey was established by the Normans in 1140. The present abbey was built in 1151. However, after Lord Rhys had successfully driven out the Anglo-Normans from the region the Abbey changed allegiances and for centuries supported the native Welsh princes. Consequently, after the bloody rebellions of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and Owain Glyndwr the Abbey suffered at the brutal hands of the Anglo Normans. After the Reformation the Abbey became ruinous and over the succeeding centuries the walls became a readily available source of stone. This explains why very little of this once important edifice has survived.
