Former lifting bridge?
The canal narrows here and I believe this could have been the site of a lifting bridge

Mystery Structure
This crumbling structure is just north of a point where the canal narrows markedly between two quays that look as if they are constructed of concrete, but none of the Geograph walk participants knew what this is for. My thanks to Janette Peacey who contacted me to suggest that it might have been a lifting bridge. Also to Ray who tells me that he thinks this was the Great Central Railway lifting bridge that once existed over the Tinsley Canal to sidings at Tinsley Park Collieries.

Derelict lifting bridge, Sheffield and Tinsley Canal
What looked liked the remains of an old derelict lifting bridge, next to a modern concrete reinforced narrowing of the canal. For a wider view see Image Taken during the Geograph Conference 2012 first guided walk.

Quiet stretch of Sheffield & Tinsley Canal
It's mostly all quiet, on the canal at least; saw only one narrow boat this morning. The constant noise of traffic, tram, and industry dispels the rural illusion. But this stretch is very well covered with shrubs, buddleia in particular grows in profusion, as well as on the nearby River Don.
