Resting At The Weekend
Class 56 locomotives stand on Worksop Depot during a weekend. They are coupled to merry-go-round trains of HAA hoppers, that were used in continuous circuits between collieries and power stations during the week. Many of the collieries in the area have now closed. Beyond is the shed which I believe was used for wagon maintenance and appears to have the same function today. The Class 56's were built between 1976 and 1984 with the first 30 being built by Electroputere in Romania as the requirement for the new locomotives was extreme at the time. Subsequent orders went to Doncaster and Crewe where the standard of finish was superior to the initial batch. A total of 135 were built. In this image 56004 on the left is a Romanian example whilst 56076 is one built at Doncaster - you will note some minor differences to the cab ends.
