Staincross for Mapplewell railway station (site), Yorkshire
Opened in 1882 as "Staincross" by the Barnsley Coal Railway, soon to be part of the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, on the short line from Nostell to Stairfoot, near Barnsley. The station gained "for Mapplewell" in 1927, but closed to passengers in 1930. View north west from the bridge over the railway. The entrance was a path leading down from road level into the cutting, starting just in front of the building. It is possible the building was the station-master's house - there were no other buildings in the vicinity on the 1892 map. How things have changed! This view of the building has since been partially blocked by the building of a new wall.
