Old Milestone by the A637, Claycliffe Road, Barnsley
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A637, in parish of BARNSLEY (BARNSLEY District), Claycliffe Road between the A635 and B6428, on the verge at the junction of the A637 with Medina Way, on West side of road. Brayshaw & Booth iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- : HUDDERSFIELD / 14¼ MILES / BRETTON / 4½ MILES : : BARNSLEY & GRANGE MOOR / ROAD / BARAUGH : : BARNSLEY / 2 MILES : Hole in top. Maker:- : BRAYSHAW & BOOTH / MAKERS / LIVERSEDGE : Grade II listed. Old milestone
One of the 615 West Riding County Council milestones set up in 1893/94. It is on the A637 Claycliffe Road and has been painted recently although it is not known by whom. The foundry name has been highlighted. Note the old spelling of Barugh. It is Grade II listed 1151794.
