Newcomen atmospheric steam pumphouse
The historic mine pumphouse is awaiting a grant to restore it. It was so overgrown with weeds and chained up that this was the beat photo I could get.

Elsecar Newcomen Engine - 'gone indoors'
The Elsecar Newcomen engine was built in 1795 and is the oldest in situ atmospheric engine in the world. It has now been restored and can be moved by hydraulic power. The normal resting position of an atmospheric beam engine is with the outdoor (pump) end of the beam in the down position. In this photograph the indoor end is down (i.e. the engine has gone indoors) and this indicates that the engine is being powered by the hydraulic system. This was a special event for the International Early Engines Conference.

Newcomen engine house
The Newcomen is an early steam engine, used to pump water out of coal mines. This is the only Newcomen engine in the world to still be in the place it was first installed.

Elsecar Newcomen engine
I would have thought this would be open today with a large music event. Sadly not. However the state and lack of openings will be a thing of the past, work should begin soon to restore the engine. £500,000 is being spent.
