The straightness of this lane reflects the fact that it was originally a tramway inclined plane, connecting Milton Ironworks with the canal at Elsecar basin.

Fitzwilliam Lodge
This was built as a lodging house for single miners from the Staffordshire coalfield, in the early 1850’s, by Earl Fitzwilliam and restored in 1982. It is still in residential use.
