"In Affectionate Remembrance"
Coal mine disaster memorial in Darfield churchyard. This one commemorates the tragic deaths of ten miners at nearby Houghton Main Colliery on December 30th 1886. Three of the men who died had the same surname - Walker and two were called Pearson and another two Hardcastle.

The Grave of Robert Millthorp, Darfield
Aged just 19, Millthorp died in bizarre circumstances in 1826 - crushed by the very stone that is now his gravestone. This verse is engraved on the stone:- Alas how frail this brittle clay Though formed with matchless art Death waits in ambush for his prey And none escapes his dart A youthful Frolic promted on Whilst the grim Tyrant gave The mortal stroke by this same stone That marks my early grave
