The Royal Oak, Wombwell

St Mary's Church, Wombwell
The church was built over a number of years from the laying of the foundation stone of the nave in 1896. The porch and tower were dedicated by Dr Burrows, the new Bishop of Sheffield, in June 1914. A short exhibition illustrates how the building developed. In 1920 a magnificent Memorial Window was erected in memory of Lieut. J.S.Mitchell, R.F.C., and in honour of the men of Mitchell Main and Darfield Main who served in WW1.

There has been a church on this site in the centre of the town since the 12th century. The present church was built between 1896 and 1914.
