The Church of St Michael and All Angels
In Great Houghton. The church was originally a private chapel and was built by Sir Edward Rodes, the High Sheriff of Yorkshire who was a conspicuous Parliamentarian. It was built about 1650 and used for worship by his family and tenants of his land. Sir Edward, whose coat of arms appeared in stone on the east gable of the church, died on the 19th February 1666 and is buried at Darfield Church.

In Great Houghton
In Great Houghton you can still hear the echoes of coal miners' boots - even though the coal industry shrivelled away a long time ago now. In this photograph you can see The Miners Welfare Hall (1923) and the memorial gardens that still remind passers by of what once was.
