Monk Bretton Priory - The Kitchen
The kitchen was adjacent to the monastery's refectory. Water supply and drainage were cleverly devised and in this picture you can see the stone channel that ran under the kitchen floor. In the wall ahead (left of centre) you can see a hole in the refectory wall. It has a semi-circular arch. This was in effect the serving hatch.

Monk Bretton Priory
12th Century Benedictine Priory which has amongst its more obvious architectural delights, some of the best surviving examples of medieval drainage in Europe. This picture was taken on a fine Friday afternoon in early October and i was the only visitor. The mill across the road which is associated with the priory is at the time of posting - an Italian restaurant!
