The route of the Barnsley Canal at Honeywell
The open space was once part of the Barnsley Canal, between Barnsley and Barnby Basin. Built to carry coal out of the Barnsley coalfields, it opened in early 1802 and formally closed in 1953. Much of the former towpath is now a public footpath.

Winter tree in Honeywell
The open area is on the line of the former Barnsley Canal (Barnby Basin branch). The canal closed in 1953 at which time the tree might have been a sapling on the towpath.
