Royal Hotel buildings, Royal Street
The bay with the wide entrance was the hotel garage http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4077443, but it is not clear whether the remaining premises had hotel accommodation on the first floor above the retail units.

The Royal Hotel Garage
The use of terracotta and styling indicates a build date of around 1930 when private transport was beginning to become widespread and hotels had to provide for their discerning customers. The hotel has now reverted to its original name of The White Bear, and the garage has been turned into other accommodation.

Permanent Building
This is specifically the name of the building, inscribed above the entrance on the corner. So named because it was the headquarters of the Barnsley Permanent Building Society. A further inscription records the laying of the foundation stone in November 1935, the architect being J R Wilkinson. The Building Society is now housed elsewhere.
