Great Sheffield Flood memorial wall
The memorial wall in the Loxley Valley was created by local artist Stoneface Creative to remember the devastation and lives that were lost to this tragic event of 1864 when Dale Dyke Reservoir failed and flooded the valley and the centre of Sheffield. The memorial wall runs along the side of Beacon Wood and the River Loxley. The drystone wall is designed to look like flowing water washing down the valley. Engraved into the stones are poignant facts and figures from the flood. Towards the bottom, the wall has been designed to look like a torrent of water. A local primary school chose the words in the circular stones to depict the feelings and emotions of the tragic event. The wall has also been topped with soil instead of traditional stone toppers this was to represent that how all the destruction that the flood caused nature has all but covered it all.
