Thurcroft Colliery, 2nd August 1977
Thurcroft Colliery, near Rotherham. No.1 (downcast) Shaft for coal and fresh air to the left of centre; and at the extreme right, No.2 (upcast) Shaft, also known as the 'Shonkey' shaft for some strange reason, for men, materials, and return air. Shaft sinking began in 1909 and coal production started in 1912. The mine finally closed ended in December 1991. The pit top structures were eventually demolished and the area restored and landscaped. I was the mine geologist for Thurcroft Colliery from 1974 to 1982.

Grass Track
Although difficult to see on this image the curved banking in the grass is a cycle grass track, or at least one end of it. This track is just one part of the sports facilities of Thurcroft Welfare which the miners of the former colliery would have enjoyed.
