Burgin & Ball Ltd., Malin Bridge, Sheffield - 1
Although Burgin & Ball's have been in Malin Bridge for many years this view of their factory and the River Loxley, flowing alongside, has only recently been made possible by the removal of lots of trees as part of some much needed 'Flood Defence' work by the Environment Agency. Image Image Image

La Plata Works, Malin Bridge, Sheffield
Burgon & Ball, famous for producing Sheep Shearing Cutters, own the 'La Plata' Works at Malin Bridge. They first occupied this site in 1873 following the devastation of this area (and others in the Loxley Valley) in 'The Great Sheffield Flood of 1864.' The only reference I can find for 'La Plata' is that it is a port in Uruguay ... perhaps one of the main ports that Burgon & Ball exported their Shears too. Image Image Image Image

Tram Park + Ride, Malin Bridge, Sheffield
This Park + Ride is at the Malin Bridge end of the Blue Tram Line ... not so popular when it first opened but, reportedly, is attracting more cars each week. On the day of the photograph - Sunday - it was virtually empty. The 'La Plata' works of Burgon & Ball are in the background. Image

La Plata Works, Malin Bridge
A typical small engineering firm on the River Loxley from which it would have originally drawn its power.
The current owners have been on this site for nearly 100 years and are still producing hand-crafted sharp implements - sheep shearing equipment and garden tools. In this respect they are likely to be one of the most 'typically Sheffield' firms still operating.
