Walkley Senior School Building, Burnaby Crescent, Lower Walkley, Sheffield
This superb building was erected for the Sheffield School Board in 1874, for the senior pupils of the district. The primary school is lower down the hill on the right. It hasn't been used as a school for some years now, and, as far as I can ascertain, it is now Student accommodation for the University ... if you know differently please let me know. It was originally surrounded by terraced housing ... now mostly demolished and grassed over making it much more visible from the surrounding streets. Notice the sign for 'Infants' on the left side post ... the area on the right side post is blank, perhaps it had a word which has now been erased. The railings in front of the gates have seen better days ... and are probably used for impromptu gymnastics by (other) children waiting for their brothers or sisters! Image

This new apartments block - named after King James Street just to the rear on this picture - follows the rounded design of the Freedom Public House which stood on this corner for many years. The pub was locally known as the 'bottom Freedom' to distinguish it from the 'top Freedom' pub in Upper Walkley. Image
