Railings Mystery, Hillsborough Barracks, Sheffield
Early pictures of Hillsborough Barracks clearly show 'Arrow Head' railings fixed to the complete length of the front wall. This picture shows that only a short section now remains! Probably the 'missing railings' were removed during WW2, along with lots of others all over the country to be melted down to help the war effort ... but why has this section remained? One theory is that as the wall reduces in height along its length - and it does - then leaving the railings intact was allowed for security. Any other ideas?

Infirmary Building, Hillsborough Barracks, Sheffield
This view shows the rear of the building, which besides having hospital wards for the soldiers also contained Dental Facilities and a section for the Soldier's Wives. This building is now used for business units and shops and still contains many of the original features.

Langsett Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield
These former soldiers' headstones inserted into this stone wall, on what is now a very short service road linking part of the former Hillsborough Barracks complex with Langsett Road, are very obviously 'outside' any grounds that surround the chapel behind the wall. There was no clues about whether they have been positioned here since yesteryear or whether they were repositioned here during the transformation of the former barracks into a combined business and shopping centre.
