Woolworths in Hillsborough ... Going ...
This picture was taken on 11th December 2008 ... the day after it was announced that the Woolworths Chain of Shops would (sadly) close. The 50% Sale Posters reflect this situation ... with lots of people 'snapping up' bargains for Christmas. When the store was built in the late 1950's it was twice the size utilising the space now used by Superdrug. My wife was a 'Saturday Girl' here in the early 70's. At the turn of the century the Hillsborough National School occupied the site, this was demolished in 1939 and the land was disused until Woolworths was built. The glass structure next to Superdrug is above the entrance to the Hillsborough Shopping Precinct ... the overhead wires give power to the Sheffield Supertrams which run past the store. Image Image
