St John's Church, Owlerton, Sheffield
The east side of the St John the Baptist Church, viewed from a large car park in front of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium. The church was built in 1874 by J.B. Mitchell-Withers at a cost of £6,300. Amongst other members of the congregation it seems that officers from nearby Hillsborough Barracks may well have attended services here, as opposed to, or in addition to, attending services held in the Barracks Chapel. The headquarters of Swann Morton Ltd, a leading manufacturer of scalpel handles, blades and other surgical equipment are visible on the opposite side of Penistone Road. The company was founded in 1932 to make and sell razor blades.

Stadium, Owlerton, Sheffield, S.Yorks
The Owlerton track became the second ‘oval circuit’ stadium in Sheffield to be used for greyhound racing, after one in Darnall. It opened for dog racing in January 1932 having been previously used for speedway racing since 30 March 1929. Since then, the stadium has closed on two occasions, once to meet safety and associated refurbishment requirements and then in 1990 following a mistake with its betting licence. Most recently, A&S Leisure (the owners of five casino restaurants) purchased the track and they have reportedly spent £3 million on further refurbishments.
