Former Middlewood Hospital Gate, Middlewood Road North, Sheffield
Middlewood Mental Hospital, in its various guises, was opened in 1872 and finally closed in 1998 ... latterly the grounds have been developed into Wadsley Park Village housing estate, including two of the original hospital buildings converted into apartments. This gate, close to the former Key Lodge, is set into the original boundary wall of the hospital. It would have been used to give access to and from the Hospital Allotments which were on the opposite side of the road, on land developed in the 1960s into the Winn Gardens estate ... part of which can be seen in the photograph ... Image Image Image A second gate, of a similar design, can be found nearby in Stockarth Lane ... this gave access to the Hospital Farm. Image

Signs at Wadsley Park Village, Middlewood Drive, Middlewood, Sheffield
Should the top sign be allowed ...some would say it is a blot on the landscape! The middle sign for Wadsley Park Village, is very tasteful and has (I believe) been supplied by Bradfield Parish Council ... strange that a 'matching' one for the Winn Gardens Estate on the opposite side of the road, hasn't been supplied. The third (bottom) sign has been supplied by Sheffield Council ... but why wasn't it fixed centrally under the sign above it? Shame on you and whoever put it up so carelessly!
