Ex-Midland 2F 0-6-0 at Canklow Locomotive Depot, Rotherham
Formerly LMS No. 3156, No. 58238 is a 2F 4'11" 0-6-0 more or less in original form as designed by Johnson in 1876. It is one of the many hundreds of Midland 0-6-0s originated by Johnson, many - but not this one - being modernised by Deeley in the 1900s. In 1949 87 of these survived out of several hundred built originally; No. 58238 was withdrawn in 12/57.

Midland 1F 0-6-0T hurries home on Sunday at Canklow Depot from Masborough Sorting Sidings
Running southward on the ex-North Midland Railway 'Old Road' south of Rotherham, is LMS No. 1805, one of the survivors of the 280 4'7" 1F shunting engines designed by Samuel Johnson in 1874 and still in more or less original form in 1949. Note the surrounding 'industrial desert'.

LNE B1 4-6-0 passing Canklow Locomotive Depot
View eastward past a line-up of engines outside the Depot, across the ex-North Midland Chesterfield - Rotherham line and the River Rother to the hills south of Rotherham and towards Whiston. By 1963, Canklow Depot was in the Eastern Region (coded 41D) and Thompson B1 No. 61094 (built 11/46, withdrawn 8/65) belonged there.

Line of resting goods engines at Canklow (Rotherham) Locomotive Depot
View northward, the Shed being behind camera: a line of ex-LMS (mainly Midland) 0-6-0s and 0-6-0Ts are lined up on a Sunday, including 4F No. 4128, 3F No. 43817, 2F No. 22965 and three 0-6-0Ts (the one at the end being a very old one with half-cab; note that the first engine has not acquired its initial '4' and others still have 'LMS' insignia. Canklow Shed (code 19C) had an allocation in 1950 of 53 locomotives:- 1 4-4-0, 10 2-8-0, 1 2-6-0, 36 0-6-0 and 5 0-6-0T, thus virtually all being for the heavy freight traffic of the nearby Masborough Sorting Sidings along the 'Old Road', Chesterfield - Rotherham. The Depot closed on 11/10/65.
