Brightside Colliery Memorial Wheel Plaque, Holywell Road, Brightside, Sheffield
The memorial wheel and plaque were funded and arranged by
the (Sheffield) North East Community Assembly in 2012
There were two Brightside Colliery Shafts in this area …
… and a Colliery Road still exists, not far from this spot.
The wheel has been placed opposite the entrance to the Colliery
The plaque gives the dates of the two Colliery Shafts as … 1855 - 1871 and 1868 - 1886
It also gives details of, and serves as a memorial to two accidents at the pit.
The first was on the 23rd October 1865, when 3 persons died -
two of which were a father and son - following an explosion of fire damp.
The second was on the 12th April 1867, when five men died after a
lift shaft wire rope broke as they were descending to the coal face.
It also carries a dedication to another man who was accidentally killed in January 1873

Locomotive at River Don Works, Sheffield
Number unidentified, it is one of a batch of 10 built for the English Steel Corporation in 1959 for use at the River Don site.
The precise location of the site can be identified on old OS maps from the track layout and the fact that it is passing over a weighbridge. The weighbridge house still survives – here a very small corner of it can be seen to the left of the loco cab.
