Sutton Scarsdale Hall - Architectural Detail (4)
The Hall is a wreck - although the internal and external walls are standing, it has no roof, windows, doors etc. In one room only is there some slight remaining traces of the internal decoration - according to the on-site information board much of the internal fittings were sent to America in 1919. The room containing these fragments is currently barred and locked, presumably to afford (belated) protection.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall
Designed by Francis Smith and built in 1724, it is one of the finest Baroque ruins in the country. The house was bought by the son of Sir Richard Arkwright, and sold to a property speculator in 1919. He obviously didn't look after it.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall
Shell of a grand Georgian mansion re-modeled from an earlier building in 1724 by Francis Smith of Warwick for Nicholas, fourth Earl of Scarsdale, and was once one of the finest country houses in Derbyshire. Roofless since 1919 when its interiors were dismantled and some exported to the USA.
