"The Duckmanton Hotel", Duckmnaton
This massive public house may be seen as a memorial to the many hundreds of coal miners and coal mining families who drank here and laughed and argued. Funeral buffets and wedding breakfasts, singers and slot machines. Now there are only the quiet ghosts of all that life since nearby Markham and Ireland collieries are now closed forever.

Mural, Markham Court, Duckmanton
Placed on this gable end in 2000 and funded by the local residents' association along with National Lottery Millenium (sic) funding, the mural is "dedicated to those who died in the mining industry at Markham Colliery". The bottom tiles - no doubt sponsored by local companies - appear to advertise those selfsame businesses.
