The Five Pits Trail Williamthorpe loop
Walking the Five Pits Trail loop around Holmewood and Williamthorpe Image : Previous – (4 of 21) - Next : Image This northerly facing photograph of the trail was taken on the site of the Great Central Railway's Heath Station and shows the Five Pits Trail as it approaches Devonshire Terrace (the original route for Heath Road) in Holmewood. To the right of the viewpoint is Park Road, which provides access to The Holmewood Industrial Park. The Holmewood Industrial Park is built on the site of Williamthorpe Hall and Wood and the subsequent Williamthorpe Colliery. Ahead the trail joins Devonshire Terrace for a short distance to cross Park Road via a road bridge to continue toward the ponds and nature reserve at Williamthorpe. - - - An OS map surveyed in 1914 and published in 1921 shows that the trackbed at this point carried the tracks of the Great Central Railway. These tracks, part of the railway's Derbyshire Lines, were part of a route from the south, via Tibshelf that continued on toward Staveley with a branch via Chesterfield.

Holmewood - bus shelter at Devonshire Terrace
This spacious bus shelter must be a hangover from the days when it would be crowded with shift-workers from the local heavy industry (colliery, coke ovens and railway sidings) waiting for their bus home. Behind the bus shelter stood Heath railway station (closed 1966). For a photo of the terrace across the road from the bus shelter, please see Image
