Up coke train approaching Chesterfield Midland Station
View northward, towards Tapton Junction, Sheffield etc.; ex-Midland main north-south trunk line. This train, headed by Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48186 and formed of high-capacity coke wagons, followed soon after the Up express in Image - and the iron ore train on the Down Slow has not moved yet.

Midland 0-6-0 on Up goods passing Chesterfield, 1955
Typical of the trains that ran on the four tracks through Chesterfield (Midland) station, constantly day and night in those days, is this Class J on the Up goods line, headed by ex-Midland 3F 0-6-0 No. 43457 (built 1892, withdrawn 6/60).

Chesterfield LMS, 1951: four locomotives coupled running on the Up Main
View northward, towards Tapton Junction, Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds etc. A scene typical of the time - and very wet - when all four lines through here were in constant use and light-engine workings had to be minimized to save line occupation. Heading is Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48357 (built 1944, withdrawn 9/66) with two 3F 0-6-0s and another 2-8-0 behind.

Down iron ore train north of Chesterfield (Midland)
View southward from just north of Chesterfield Station - just visible, showing a Down iron ore train, from the Northamptonshire ore-fields to the South Yorkshire (Don Valley) blast-furnaces. The locomotive is - once again a Stanier 8F 2-8-0, No. 48356.
