Grassmoor Country Park
This photograph of the country park was taken from a point close to the park's northern boundary and is overlooking Corbriggs. Near the houses and to the right of centre is a small car park that marks the northern end of the Five Pits Trail https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/images/5%20Pits%20lft%20Jan%202014%20web_tcm44-216030.pdf . Grassmoor Country Park occupies much of the site of a colliery and training centre that closed between 1967 and 1971 http://www.derbyshireuk.net/grassmoor.html http://www.grassmoor.org.uk/about_grassmoor.htm http://www.grassmoorlagoons.info/background.html . The photograph was taken from a point near to what was once the colliery spoil tip. Rising from the car park and into the foreground of the photograph is an access track to an area that is currently closed to the public. When the mine ceased operations some landscaping took place, however large quantities of toxic coal tar sludge were piped into lagoons from the Avenue Coking Plant. These lagoons were behind and to the left of the viewpoint. When the coking plant closed in 1993 Derbyshire County Council inherited the site and in 2010 work began to clear the contaminated land http://www.grassmoorlagoons.info/index.html . Although at the time of writing (March 2018) the landscaping has been completed it is anticipated that the area will not be available for public use until some time between 2019 and 2022 because of continuing problems relating to the contamination. These include contaminated surface areas and issues that are producing contaminated water.
