Lion Works, Mowbray Street, Sheffield
Formerly associated with toolmaking or other metal trades, probably mid-late C19th. Pevsner mentions a crucible shop in Ball Street. Now providing office space and incorporating a cafe at the far end.

Bedford Works by The River Don, Sheffield
The photograph was taken from Ball Street Bridge - looking across Kelham Weir. The company that became John Bedford & Sons was founded in Sheffield in 1792. They specialised in tool making - including spanners, hammers, files and chisels.

The River Don from Ball Street Bridge
I was surprised by two things on this rare weekday visit to the area of Sheffield. Firstly that there was still the smell of oil, machine coolant and steel in the air from small tool-making works, and also that the east bank of the river is still lined with factory buildings. One of my earliest memories is being taken, for some reason, to the works that my dad was a manager at and looking out of a window at the, in those days, filthy river. I think it would have been from within the farthest, stone-built factory. John Nicholson’s was the company name. It was a precision grinding shop and part of The Neepsend Steel and Tool Corporation.

Flood debris
A pile of debris which has been cleared from the River Don from the stretch below Kelham Island Weir, clearly to minimise the effects of future floods. It is clearly then being hauled out onto the bridge for disposal elsewhere.
