Village Smithy, Mortimer Road, Midhopestones, near Stocksbridge - 1
The Midhopestones Village Smithy is situated at the crossroads of Mortimer Road and Oaks Lane, which is handy as Mortimer Road was the main Toll Road in the area and would have provided plenty of passing business for the Smithy and his apprentice. For a closer view …see … Image On the right hand side of the building is a cornerstone, on which is carved the date of 1788 and the initials GB, which are thought to be the initials of a long ago apprentice … see … Image Whilst I was taking these pictures, some local men working in the Smithy building pointed out to me another 'lesser known' cornerstone on the left hand side, on which there are more carvings, However whilst plainly visible the carving can't be deciphered … at least not to me, nor the men! Pre-Fab Terrapin Classrooms on Mortimer Road, Midhopestones, near Stocksbridge - 1
The (former) school building can be seen on the right … it was to this school that the Pre-Fab Classrooms were built as the pupil numbers increased. This building is in a very poor and dangerous condition, and has been like this, and getting worse, for years. Why isn't it just demolished and the area tidied up? In about 5 months the Tour de France will pass this site … somehow, I think it will be mysteriously sorted before the massive TV audience sees it. For full information about the former school … see … Image For more views … see … Image Image Image Image Image Image
