Palace Cinema, Stocksbridge
Sandwiched between the Lidl Supermarket and the parade of shops on Manchester Road is the Palace Cinema ... opened in 1920 to replace (I believe) the Electric Theatre on Edward Street. There has always been shops on the ground floor but the actual cinema area is now known (grandly) as a shopping mall containing more shops and stalls. Reginald Dixon - of Blackpool Tower Ballroom fame - started his career in this cinema playing the piano to accompany silent movies. Image Image Image Image Image Image Update in April 2011 ... I have been contacted by Frances Bailey whose Grandparents - Jack and Mary Haines - were respectively the Manager / Projectionist and Usherette, between 1922 and 1931. Her father - Robert Haines - remembers being able to get into the Saturday Matinee in exchange for a jam jar. He and his mates used to somersault off the front row seats when they became bored - Happy Days!
