Greenhead Almshouses, now Foys Solicitors, Burncross Road, Chapeltown, Sheffield - 1
The Greenhead Almshouses were founded by a Mrs Lydia Freeman, from nearby Housley Hall, in 1837. There were six houses each with their own front door ... three each side of a central castellated communal room complete with its own front door. The communal room served as a Reading Room and Chapel. Above the front door is a coat-of-arms and motto reading - DUM SPIRO SPERO,
which translates as WHILE I BREATHE, I HOPE.
This lovely building has been given a new life as home to a branch of Foys Solicitors.
