Painted Lady on Creeping Thistle
A couple of fields of thistles were attracting large numbers of butterflies on this hot July evening - the majority, in the largest numbers I've ever seen, were Painted Ladies, but also Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Red Admiral. This was the best shot I managed of this beautiful but active butterfly. I believe the plant is Creeping Thistle (Cirsium arvense) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_lady and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creeping_thistle for more information on these species.
