Mill engine "Edna" at Bamford Mill
1907 Musgrave horizontal tandem compound engine. This was retained when the mill was converted to housing but the house is in need of renovation and a boiler plus a group of volunteers to run it would be most welcome.

Bamford Cotton Mill
The mill was the first of many on the course of the Derwent and was built around 1780. It was a cotton mill which ceased production in 1965. It has now been converted into apartments.

Mill engine at full chat.
A public steaming day with the Musgrave engine running at just over 100 rpm - which is why the barring teeth on the flywheel rim are blurred. The engine still survives but there is no steam plant and the mill is now all flats. The picture was taken with the aid of a Metz Mecablitz 60CT1 - an invaluable tool for this type of work.

Messrs Carbolite, Bamford Mills - steam engine
This magnificent Musgrave tandem compound mill engine was still workable in 1983 and was occasionally demonstrated in steam at its design speed of 103 rpm. This is the view from the rope race with the engine at rest. The site was later sold for development into apartments but the engine was retained. It is still in situ but the engine house has had the rope race removed and an apartment inserted over the engine, so that there is now a lower roof over the engine and some of the character has been lost. The site also discourages visitors wanting to see the engine. I have not seen it for some time now and I prefer to remember it as shown here.
