The decoration is based on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, to mark 125 years since he was born. Under the picture is the message: Not all those who wander are lost. Part of the decoration is in runes

Merrill Cottage, Townhead, Eyam
The home of Humphrey Merrill, the herbalist in Eyam at the time of the plague Image The inscription reads: Humphrey Merrill the village herbalist died here in September 1666. His wife Anne survived. Andrew Merrill also lived here. He survived the plague by going to the edge of Eyam Moor and building a crude hut in which he lived with his pet cockerel until the plague was over

Hall Hill Troughs, Eyam
Adjoining notice reads: "Hall Hill Troughs - so-called from nearby Bradshaw Hall - is one of at least ten series of troughs (some now sealed) provided for domestic and agricultural use in 1588 and confirmed by the Eyam Enclosure Award of May 17 1803. The system is said to be one of the first public water supplies in the country."
