Albert?s Dock on the Chesterfield Canal
Kiveton Park Station, South Yorkshire The Chesterfield Canal was built to export coal, limestone and lead from Derbyshire, and iron from Chesterfield, but its most prestigious cargo was stone. Following a devastating fire in 1834, stone quarried in nearby North Anston for the rebuilding of one of the world's most iconic buildings, the Houses of Parliament at Westminster, was transported by the canal from Albert's Dock at Kiveton Park to West Stockwith, and from there by barge via the Rivers Trent and Humber before embarking on the long sea voyage along the coast to the River Thames and London. A commemorative panel is erected by the towpath, telling the story of this major event in the history of the canal.
