Sheffield Energy Recovery Facility, Bernard Road
The facility was opened in 2006 and is designed to incinerate up to 225,000 tonnes of municipal and trade waste per annum. The current throughput of waste at the facility is around 140,000 tons of waste. The incinerated waste generates energy in the form of heat which is distributed to over 140 buildings across the city via a district energy network. It also exports 19 megawatts of electricity to the National Grid (enough to power 22,600 homes). http://cbcminutes.ecomsoftware.com/Resources/showdoc.asp?ID=24251 - Sheffield Planning Committee minutes January 2010 (word document)

Sheffield Incinerator from Burngreave
The Sheffield Incinerator is a modern incinerator which turns Sheffield's household waste into power. It is notable as it not only provides electricity from the combustion of waste but also supplies heat to a local district heating scheme, making it one of the most advanced, energy efficient incineration plants in the UK. In 2004, the district heating network prevented 15,108 tonnes of CO2 from being released from buildings across the city, compared to energy derived from fossil fuels. The incinerator is presently owned by Veolia Environmental Services.

Refuse lorries and electric locomotives at Sheffield
Refuse lorries of the then Sheffield Corporation Cleansing depart in the yard at the refuse destruction, now replaced by a modern incineration and generation plant. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5656820 . The locomotives are two of the EM1 class BoBo 1500V DC locomotives built for the Woodhead line between Sheffield and Manchester.
The refuse lorries were at the time only an incidental to the locomotives, which were the reason for taking the picture, but it is instructive to see how the design of such vehicles has changed over the years.
