View towards Laughton Common from the hill
Laughton en le Morthen sits on top of a commanding hill - commanding all the better in times gone by with a motte and bailey castle and a soaring church spire visible from many miles away. Today the coal mining industry that used to dominate the surrounding landscape has gone and light industry is gradually taking its place. Farming enjoys fertile conditions for arable crops.

Site of Dinnington & Laughton station, 1993
View southward, towards Shireoaks: ex-South Yorkshire Joint Line, one of the several lines built for traffic from the many collieries to avoid the bottleneck at Doncaster. This one was operated jointly by the GC, GN, L&Y, Midland and NE Railways (!) and had a passenger service until 2/12/29, but was still open for freight in 1993 - probably until 2011. [?]
