The Travellers Rest and City Road (August 1994)
The Travellers Rest, seen on the left, was a long established pub at 525 City Road. It was acquired by the former Punch Taverns, but had some problems in its last years, and eventually it closed around 2006. The signs outside indicate it sold Tetley's beers. The building still exists, but is now a shop. The pub's car park, on the right of the pub, has been acquired by Sheffield City Council, to provide a new entrance to a rejuvenated public park at the rear.
The two yellow and red buses belonged to Sheffield Mainline, who were for a few years the major bus operator in Sheffield. The Mainline Group were purchased by First in 1998, and the livery then disappeared, to be replaced by the corporate one of First.
In the roadway can be seen recently laid tram lines. These were for South Yorkshire (now Sheffield) Supertram. This part of the system was not open when this photograph was taken, the main missing element being the overhead power lines. In the meantime, trams had to terminate around the corner at the Spring Lane stop.
