Up freight on ex-GC Sheffield - Nottingham main line near Holbrook Colliery Sidings, between Beighton and Killamarsh
View northward, towards Sheffield and Rotherham. Ex-NER Raven LNER B16/1 4-6-0 No. 61432 (built 6/21 as No. 942, withdrawn 7/61) heads a typical freight on the ex-GC main line southward from Sheffield, also Doncaster etc. via Rotherham. Over to the right is the ex-Midland main line from Rotherham (Masborough) to Chesterfield and the River Rother, while out of frame to the left is the ex-GC (former LD&EC) line to Langwith Junction and Lincoln. (It was an ideal spot for train-watching, but the weather was not good that day).

Former Railway, near Sothall
There was once a tangle of railways through this part of the Rother Valley. This was the Great Central line between Nottingham and Sheffield; the parallel Midland line remains as an important freight route between Chesterfield and Rotherham. This section now forms part of the Trans-Pennine trail.

Blackthorn and dog poo bin
The blackthorn is in flower unseasonably early (there was hawthorn in leaf nearby) owing to an exceptionally mild winter (so far!).
