Church Street
The road on the left is Vicar Lane. Church Street was one of the roads chosen for the route of the Sheffield Supertram system in the city centre. Although there are shops in this area, the route studiously avoids the prime shopping area. There have been various suggestions for extending the system and some of these involve threading a line through the main shopping area. To date all of these proposals have come to nothing, as the present Government does not seem prepared to contribute any money. All Sheffield is definitely getting is four new trams and these are unlikely to arrive in the immediate future.

Sheffield City Hall
Looking clean and shiny from its recent makeover, Sheffield City Hall occupies pride of place in Barkers Pool opposite that other great Sheffield Icon, "The Shop Formerly Known As Cole Brothers" (aka John Lewis). The Cenotaph isn't really leaning - I am.

Sheffield Supertram No. 118 in Church Street
The tram is in the latest Stagecoach livery, which is the third livery it has worn since entering service in about 1994. The tram is destined for Middlewood and will call at stops for Sheffield University and Hillsborough and others on its journey. There is a park and ride site at Middlewood. There was at one time a suggestion for a short branch off this route to serve a local hospital but this has come to nothing.

Facade of Cairns Chambers - Church Street, Sheffield
Built between 1894 and 1896, Cairns Chambers were designed by Charles Hadfield in Tudor Gothic style for the solicitors Henry & Alfred Maxwell. The chambers have decorative exterior stonework by Frank Tory - including the four foot statue of Earl Cairns, a former Lord Chancellor that you can see in the photograph.
