The White Building, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield
By Gibbs & Flockton, c1908. While very original, as Pevsner comments, the building itself is a bit blocky but its faience facade is enlivened by good reliefs, by Alfred and William Tory et al, depicting various local trades (Image]). Note too the balconies, variety of window pediments, and the frieze at the very top. Grade II listed. Now shops and flats.

Detail of the White Building, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield
The reliefs on this building Image] depict various local trades, in this case a chaser (engraver) and an engineer (thanks to Sheffield Hallam University's Public Art Research Archive). This also shows that although the building appears white, the cladding is in fact polychromatic.

Sheffield: Castle Square
From the 1960s to 1994, this was known as the 'Hole in the Road' because it comprised a symmetrical, four-exit roundabout with one of those deep, uninviting pedestrian subways with access from the four corners, which had a couple of newsagent stands in the middle. It was filled in in the mid 90s when the tramway was installed and is now rather more attractive. Oddly, according to a signboard, it is not known whether Castle Square is named after Sheffield Castle or Barbara Castle, who was the transport minister when the hole in the road was put in.
