New flats on Bailey Street
New flats on Bailey Street in the final stage of construction. The flats, in the centre of the picture are another 'brown field' development in the city centre. Scaffolding can be seen at the right hand side of the building. This view is from near the top of Garden Street.

Hawley Street flats
Although these appear to be terraced houses, each entrance originally gave access to a stairway hall giving access to two apartments on each floor, respectively with one and two bedrooms. They were built as part of an early slum clearance project under the Housing of the Working Classes Act 1890. Although the scheme started in 1893, the new apartments were not finally ready for occupation until 1908. They still represent an early example of council housing.

Chimney pots, Hawley Street flats
See https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7589459 for location and details. The pots are modern replacements in a style that reflects the fact that the flats are within a Conservation Area.

Pennine Centre, Tenter Street, Sheffield (2)
A huge office complex consisting of five blocks, the tallest, Griffin House, rising to thirteen storeys. Built 1973-75. The architects were a local firm, Richard Hemingway and Partners. Midland Bank was an original occupant and its successor, HSBC, is still here. Its position at the foot of Broad Lane means it is surprisingly unobtrusive in most views of the city. Fellow Geographer Dave Hitchborne tells me that previously this was the site of the Tenter Street tram depot and later the Townhead Street bus depot.

Sheffield: Bailey Street
One of the back streets to the immediate north of the city centre, formerly heavy with industry. I believe the block to the left is university student accommodation.
