Former Gas Offices, Commercial Street, Sheffield
Lavish Victorian commercial architecture. Palazzo style, clad in Hollington stone with coupled pilasters and coupled granite columns, all Corinthian. The carved detail is quite sparing but high quality (Image]). By M.E. Hadfield & Son, 1874. Grade II* listed. Built for the Sheffield United Gas Light Company. Now a Chinese restaurant at street level and offices above.

The entrance has a segmental pediment, a frieze decorated with bay leaves and the figure of Atlas holding up each end. A bit of light relief after holding up the world. Full view: Image
