Bear Pit, Botanical Gardens, Sheffield 11
Set into Birch Hill, the highest part of the botanical gardens, this is a view of the rim of the bear baiting pit. The pit ceased to be used for entertainment purposes in the 1870s after a curious child fell into it and was fatally injured by the two resident bears.

The Bear Pit, Sheffield Botanical Gardens
As the name suggests the pit was once home to bears. It was originally built in 1836 and housed 2 bears until, when in 1876, a child accidentally fell into the pit and was killed. After this unfortunate incident the bears were removed. As part of the restoration of the Botanical Gardens in 2005 the large bear sculpture was installed to remind people of pits former use. The bear is made from mild steel and is intended to rust naturally over time. The structure is grade II listed. The page describing the bear pit on the Botanical Gardens website is here:http://www.sbg.org.uk/bear.asp
